Hemingway Special

Hemingway Special

About the Hemingway Special cocktail

The Hemingway Special, also known as the Hemingway Daiquiri, is a tart and refreshing rum cocktail made with white rum, grapefruit juice, maraschino liqueur, and lime juice. It builds on the classic Daiquiri formula but removes the usual simple syrup, creating a drier drink with bright citrus, subtle cherry-almond complexity, and a lightly bitter grapefruit edge.

The cocktail is closely associated with Ernest Hemingway and the Floridita bar in Havana, Cuba. Cocktail lore says Hemingway tried a Daiquiri there and preferred it with no sugar and extra rum, leading to the Hemingway Daiquiri. Grapefruit juice was later added to create the Hemingway Special, a sharper and more bracing variation for anyone who likes dry, citrus-forward rum drinks.
