About the Cuba Libre cocktail
The Cuba Libre is a classic highball made with Cuban-style rum, Coca-Cola, and fresh lime. It may look simple, but the lime is what separates it from a basic rum and Coke, adding bright citrus acidity that makes the drink more balanced, refreshing, and cocktail-like.
The drink was born in Cuba around 1900, shortly after the Spanish-American War and the Cuban War of Independence. Its name means “Free Cuba,” echoing the rallying cry of Cuban independence, and the drink became a kind of toast to that idea. With rum, cola, and lime, the Cuba Libre is easy to underestimate, but it remains one of the most historically significant and satisfying classic cocktails.
