About the Mint Julep cocktail
The Mint Julep is a classic Southern cocktail made with bourbon, mint, sugar, and crushed ice. It is cold, herbal, and whiskey-forward, with fresh mint perfume and a long, frosty sip that has made it one of America’s most recognizable drinks.
The julep dates back as far as the 1770s in the American South, when it was originally prescribed as a health aid. By 1938 it was being promoted as the official drink of the Kentucky Derby, where as many as 120,000 juleps can be sold over two days. Since 2006, Churchill Downs has even offered an ultra-premium $1,000 julep, with proceeds supporting charitable causes.
