About the French 75 cocktail
The French 75 is a classic sparkling cocktail made with gin, lemon juice, sugar, and Champagne. It is bright, crisp, and celebratory, with lemon and gin giving the drink a sharp cocktail backbone while the Champagne keeps it light, bubbly, and elegant.
The drink is named after the French 75 millimeter field gun used during World War I, a weapon known for being fast and powerful. The cocktail first appeared in print in 1927 and was later cemented in cocktail history by Harry Craddock’s 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book. Like many classics, its exact origin is murky, with earlier drinks combining gin, Champagne, citrus, and sugar before the French 75 name became iconic.
