About the Caipirinha cocktail

The drink is closely tied to cachaça, a Brazilian spirit made by fermenting and distilling fresh sugarcane juice. Cachaça became so popular in colonial Brazil that Portuguese authorities tried to restrict it in order to protect their own spirits, eventually contributing to the Cachaça Revolt in the 1660s.
