About the Americano cocktail
The Americano is a classic Italian cocktail made with Campari, sweet vermouth, and soda water. It is bright, bitter, lightly sweet, and refreshing, with Campari’s orange bite, the richness of sweet vermouth, and enough bubbles to make it feel lighter and more relaxed than a Negroni.
The drink dates back to the 1860s at Gaspare Campari’s bar in Milan, where it evolved from the Milano-Torino, a simple mix of Campari from Milan and sweet vermouth from Turin. The Americano is also famous as the first drink James Bond orders in Ian Fleming’s 1953 novel Casino Royale, appearing before Bond became permanently associated with Martinis and “shaken, not stirred.”
