Two small changes give this Whiskey Sour a noticeably sharper personality. Rye takes the place of bourbon, and the egg white is left out entirely. The familiar relationship between whiskey, lemon, and sugar remains, but without the usual softening influences, the drink feels brighter, leaner, and considerably more direct.

Rye brings peppery spice, grain, and a drier finish where bourbon might offer caramel and vanilla. That extra edge works beautifully with lemon. The two flavors meet head-on rather than melting gently into one another, giving the cocktail a lively snap while keeping the whiskey firmly present.
Leaving out the egg is more than a matter of convenience. Without that silky texture and foamy cap, the citrus arrives sooner and the rye’s character is easier to explore. The drink loses some plushness, but gains clarity. A good shake still gives it a little body, just without the sense that every sharp corner has been carefully upholstered.

The syrup keeps the combination balanced rather than severe, rounding off the lemon without muting the rye. The result is refreshing, punchy, and pleasantly brisk—a Whiskey Sour for anyone who prefers a little bite over softness and foam. No frothy moustache required.
