About the Vesper cocktail
The Vesper is a famous James Bond cocktail made with gin, vodka, and Lillet Blanc or a similar aromatized wine, finished with a lemon peel. It is crisp, boozy, and ice-cold, with gin botanicals up front, a clean vodka backbone, and just enough citrusy bitterness to keep the drink sharp and elegant.
The cocktail first appears in Ian Fleming’s 1953 novel Casino Royale, where Bond orders it with gin, vodka, and Kina Lillet, an ingredient that no longer exists in its original form. Modern versions usually use Lillet Blanc, while Cocchi Americano is a popular substitute for drinkers who want a slightly more bitter quinine-like edge. Named after Vesper Lynd, the Vesper remains one of the rare cocktails that is fictional, historical, difficult to recreate exactly, and still considered a modern classic.
