About the Martini cocktail
The Martini is one of the most iconic gin cocktails in the world, made with gin and dry vermouth and usually garnished with either an olive or a lemon twist. It is crisp, cold, dry, and clean, with very little to hide behind: just spirit, vermouth, temperature, dilution, and technique.
The exact origin of the Martini is famously debated. It may have evolved from the Martinez, taken its name from Martini vermouth, been connected to Martinez, California, or developed through several similar late-1800s recipes at once. However it emerged, the Martini became the defining dry gin cocktail: simple on paper, but precise, elegant, and easy to get wrong.
