The Coffee Rye Boulevardier

The Coffee Rye Boulevardier takes the familiar Boulevardier formula and turns the lights down. It’s still built around that classic mix of whiskey, Campari, and sweet vermouth, but the addition of coffee liqueur gives the drink a darker, richer center. Instead of coming across as bright and bittersweet, this version feels deeper and smoother, with a roasty edge that makes it feel a little more indulgent.

Rye is the perfect whiskey to complement the bold flavors in a Boulevardier. Campari is not a shy ingredient, and in a Boulevardier it can easily push its way to the front. Rye has enough spice and character to stand up to that potent ingredient without getting lost. It gives the drink a strong backbone, helping the cocktail stay structured even as the vermouth and coffee liqueur pull it in a softer, rounder direction.

The coffee liqueur changes the shape of the drink without turning it into a coffee cocktail. It adds dark richness and a smooth, bittersweet depth that plays beautifully against the red fruit notes of the Campari and sweet vermouth. You still get the familiar fruity character of a Boulevardier, but now it’s wrapped in something darker and more velvety.

By the time the drink comes together, it doesn’t feel like a simple riff, but more like the Boulevardier seen through a darker lens. It’s like a late-night version of the classic: darker, moodier, and a little more decadent, while still keeping the bones of the Boulevardier intact. It’s a familiar drink made richer and more aromatic, with the bitterness, spice, sweetness, and darkness all settling into one smooth, lingering finish. An all time favorite.
