The Black Rumhattan takes the familiar structure of a Manhattan but moves it somewhere darker and softer. Dark rum, sweet vermouth, and Angostura bitters make for a stirred cocktail that is rich, smooth, and aromatic. It has the construction of a classic whiskey-and-vermouth drink, but the rum changes it meaningfully: less sharp grain and oak, more molasses, dark fruit, and spice.

Dark rum gives the cocktail its depth. Instead of the firm bite you might expect from rye or bourbon, it brings a rounder kind of warmth, with notes that can lean toward caramel, brown sugar, spice, and dried fruit. That makes the Black Rumhattan feel plush without being sweet, especially with the bitters keeping the edges clean.
Sweet vermouth fits naturally into that darker profile. Its winey sweetness and herbal character give the rum something to lean into, adding richness while keeping the drink from feeling one-dimensional. Angostura bitters do a lot here, bringing spice and structure to a cocktail that could otherwise drift too far into softness.

The result is a Rum Manhattan that feels familiar, but not like a simple substitution. It is spirit-forward and elegant, with the slow-sipping appeal of a classic stirred cocktail and the deeper, rounder flavor of dark rum. Serve it cold with a cherry, and it lands somewhere between a nightcap and a proper cocktail-hour drink: polished, mellow, and very satisfying.
