The Ampersand

The Ampersand is a cocktail that earns its name. Old Tom gin & brandy & and sweet vermouth come together, each bringing something different with them. On paper, that can sound a little crowded. In practice, it feels surprisingly natural, like the drink has figured out a way for everyone to get along.

Old Tom gin starts things off with a soft botanical sweetness, while brandy brings warmth, fruit, and a little weight. Sweet vermouth adds a winey sweetness that smooths the join between the gin and brandy, giving the drink a rounder, more relaxed feel and turning the drink from a simple split-base curiosity into something much more complete. No single ingredient takes over, which is part of the charm. The Ampersand works because it lets each piece lean on the others.

The smaller additions help keep the drink lively. Triple sec gives the gin and brandy a shared orange thread, and orange bitters add just enough brightness to keep everything from feeling too round. The citrus is not the main event, but it does make the whole drink feel more awake.

That is the fun of the Ampersand: it is built from ingredients that could have gone in different directions, but somehow end up moving together. It feels classic, a little quirky, and very comfortable in its own skin. The name may be about addition, but the drink itself is about connection.
